She was burned with scalding grease. And somehow, she still trusts people.
Her name is Isabel. And we need you to hear her story.

On Friday, October 16, 2026, Monroe County (Alabama) Animal Control responded to a horrifying report: a cat had allegedly been deliberately burned with hot pork chop grease. When animal control arrive, they found a severely injured cat the children at the scene were calling Hazel. According to Animal Control, the person who reported the incident alleged that a neighbor had poured the hot grease on her.

Imagine the pain. The terror. The confusion of an innocent animal who couldn't possibly understand why someone would do something so cruel.

We don't know much about her life before that day. We don't know where she slept, who fed her, or whether she had someone to call her own. But we do know what happened next.

With veterinary offices closed and limited resources available at the shelter, Animal Control began reaching out for help. Through a series of connections and the compassion of people unwilling to look away, this sweet girl found her way to Coastal Whiskers Cat Rescue.

We named her Isabel!

And from the moment we met her, she showed us something extraordinary. Despite the unimaginable pain she's endured, Isabel purrs. She makes biscuits. She seeks affection. After everything that has happened to her, she still welcomes the touch of human hands.

And that might be the most heartbreaking part of all.Â

HER INJURIES ARE DEVASTATING
On Monday, October 19, Isabel was sedated so her veterinary team could thoroughly examine, clean, and begin treating her extensive burns.Â

But what they found confirmed our worst fears: Isabel's road to recovery will be long, painful, and incredibly uncertain.

Over the coming days, much of her burned skin is expected to slough away, revealing the full extent of the damage beneath. The burns covering her head are particularly concerning. As her wounds heal, scar tissue may tighten and pull at the delicate skin around her eyes. If that happens, Isabel could lose the ability to blink properly, putting her eyes and vision at serious risk.

And then there's her front leg. The burn is so severe that her tendon is exposed.

There may not be enough healthy skin surrounding the wound to grow back and cover it. Her veterinary team is watching closely for signs of improvement, but if her leg doesn't begin healing, we may be facing a devastating decision -- Isabel may need her leg amputated.

Her body is also at risk of complications from the burns themselves, including potential kidney problems. Her veterinarians will continue to monitor her bloodwork closely throughout treatment.

Thankfully, her most recent bloodwork looked excellent. And despite everything she's going through, Isabel is eating well, purring, and making biscuits!

But we've also received another heartbreaking diagnosis -- Isabel's initial feline leukemia (FeLV) test was positive, although the test line was faint. Her veterinary team plans additional testing to clarify her status.Â

While this diagnosis adds another layer of concern to her recovery, her veterinarian says that, aside from her burns, she appears to be healthy. FeLV does not automatically mean Isabel cannot recovery or go on to enjoy a loving life.Â

We refuse to let that diagnosis alone determine her future.
THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS ARE CRITICAL

Isabel will remain hospitalized through the weekend, receiving continued wound care, medication, and close observation.

We're incredibly fortunate to have a foster with a background as a retired burn nurse. She has experience with techniques used in severe burn cases and is sharing that knowledge with Isabel's veterinarian as they explore the best possible treatment options.

But we need everyone to understand something. Isabel is nowhere near out of the woods. We are fighting to save her leg. We are fighting to protect her eyes. We are fighting to help her body recover from injuries no living creature should ever have to endure.Â

As difficult as it is to say, there is still a very real possibility that her injuries may become too severe for her to recover with an acceptable quality of life. Humane euthanasia remains a possibility.

Those are words none of us want to say. And a decision none of us ever want to face. But we owe Isabel honesty, compassion, and the promise that her comfort and quality of life will always come first. For now, she is still here -- still eating -- still purring -- and still making biscuits! And when someone reaches out to comfort her, this sweet girl still responds with affection. She has not given up. And neither have we!
ISABEL NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Coastal Whiskers Cat Rescue is a small, newly established 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We don't have unlimited resources or a large reserve of money for emergencies like this.Â

But when we learned about Isabel, we knew we couldn't turn our backs on her.

Her care already involves extensive veterinary treatment, sedation, wound cleaning, medications, and hospitalization. In the coming days and weeks, she will need continued wound care, repeat bloodwork, and potentially major surgery.

We don't know how long her recovery will take. We don't know how much her medical care will ultimately cost. And, heartbreakingly, we don't even know whether she will survive. But we know she deserves the chance!

We're asking our community to help give Isabel every medically reasonable opportunity to heal. Whether you can donate $5, $10, $25, or more, every contribution helps us provide the veterinary care this precious girl so desperately needs.

If you can't donate, please share her story. Help us reach the people who can. Please follow along as we share updates about her recovery.
Â
There are several ways you to support Isabel's care. You can donate through this link, PayPal or call Ark Animal Clinic at (251) 342-2956 to donate directly. In the coming days, Coastal Whiskers will also have a social media fundraiser as another option for donations. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram.
ISABEL DESERVES JUSTICE, TOO
According to the Monroe County Animal Control (located in Alabama), the incident was brought to the attention of the District Attorney's Office and an investigator was contacted.Â

We understand that investigating animal cruelty can be difficult, particularly when physical evidence is limited and investigators must rely on witness statements. But what happened to Isabel deserves to be taken seriously.Â

If the investigation establishes that Isabel was intentionally harmed, those responsible should be held accountable!

We hope the appropriate authorities will continue investigating and exhaust every reasonable avenue to determine what happened.Â

If anyone has firsthand information, photographs, video, or other evidence related to Isabel's injuries, we encourage you to contact Monroe County law enforcement or the investigating authorities.Â

Isabel cannot tell us what happened to her. She cannot identify who hurt her. She cannot ask for justice. But we can be her voice! And we intend to be.

PLEASE DON'T LET ISABEL'S STORY END HERE
Look at her. Really look at her.Â

Beneath the burned skin, the painful wounds, and the uncertainty of what tomorrow may bring is a little cat who still leans into human touch. A little cat who still purrs. A little cat who still makes biscuits when someone shows her kindness.Â

We cannot undo what happened to Isabel. We cannot erase her pain. And we cannot promise that she'll survive.

But we can promise that she will never again have to face suffering wihtout someone fighting for her!Â

We will do everything medically reasonable to give her a future filled with the gentleness and love she deserves. Please help us fight for Isabel.

Please share Isabel's story. Every donation, every share, every person who cares gives us another opportunity to help her!
